The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), an Extended Education program, is offered through Chapman University’s Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. This is an accelerated 10-month program, designed for students who have completed an undergraduate degree and need to complete the pre-requisites (leveling courses) necessary to apply for a master’s degree program in CSD at Chapman University or another institution. This Post-Baccalaureate CSD program is essential for students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, or similar.

The Post-Baccalaureate CSD program consists of three levels: Level 1A; Level 1B; and Level 2. Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology (Master’s Preparation)

This postbaccalaureate credit certificate program is designed to prepare students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than communication disorders for entry into master’s degree programs in Speech-Language Pathology.

Holders of this certificate will attain the student learning outcomes typically attained in undergraduate degree programs in communication disorders. Specifically, certificate holders will have knowledge of 1) basic human communication processes, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural bases, and 2) the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication disorders and differences, including their etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates.

Student must receive a grade of “C” or better in each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50 to continue in the program. Completion of the program for awarding of the certificate requires 57 units of course work with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. University Requirements

To qualify for admission to a master’s program, you must meet the General University Admission Requirements for graduate standing as well as the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards as prescribed by the program.

Program Requirements

To apply, prior to the first semester of graduate enrollment, applicants must have either:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in communication science and disorders (CSD), speech-language pathology (SLP), speech and hearing sciences; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a discipline other than Speech-Language Pathology. The applicant must have at least 30 units of coursework in speech-language pathology/communication disorders as a matriculated student in an undergraduate program or post-baccalaureate program from a university with accreditation from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) before enrollment in the graduate program.

Selection Criteria

CSULB Admissions Committee will evaluate all application materials submitted by the applicants, including the following items.

  • Grade point average (GPA) in speech-language pathology coursework
  • Overall GPA
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose (500 words)
  • Resume
  • Interview Results: Only qualified applicants receive invitations to be interviewed with members of the Admissions Committee. If an interview is offered, the interview results will be included. 

Note: GRE is not required for Fall 2021 admissions. Applicants do NOT need to submit unofficial or official GRE scores.

Acceptance to CSULB’s SLP graduate programs is highly competitive. The average GPA for admission ranges from 3.6 – 4.0 (for both cumulative and SLP specific coursework).

The Admissions Committee reviews the candidate’s academic record, including grade point average and test scores. The committee also assesses the applicant’s professional experience and involvement in student organizations or other activities that demonstrate leadership skills and community involvement.

The Admissions Committee evaluates the applicant’s abilities and skills necessary to satisfy the knowledge and clinical standards established by the ASHA and faculty and the personal characteristics that are necessary to become a competent speech-language pathologist. The Admissions Committee selects applicants for matriculation who have demonstrated the personal qualities of maturity, integrity, and who are best suited for meeting the educational goals of the CSULB SLP MA program.
