Who is Eligible for Instate Tuition

The state of Texas has a very generous in-state tuition policy for international students.

International students can qualify for in-state tuition rates if they meet the following requirements:

1. You’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who graduated from a Texas high school, or you attended a Texas high school for at least 3 years and graduated from another state within the U.S.

2. You have lived in Texas for 12 months immediately prior to enrolling at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University or any public university in the state of Texas (this is called physical presence). If you don’t meet this requirement, you can still apply as an international student but you’ll have to pay out-of-state rates if accepted at one of these schools; however, there are also other options available if this is the case! For example, UTA charges $30K per year while UT Austin charges $38K per year—a significant difference!

3. Your parents were not eligible for permanent resident status when they first arrived in the U.S., but did become eligible after living here for 5 years and filing an application with USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services).
